For the past thirty-one years, Jim has been an award-winning and nationally renowned nature photographer, writer, motivational speaker, and instructor. His articles and images have appeared in magazines such as Outdoor Photographer, Nature's Best, Wildlife Refuge, Wonderful West Virginia, Birders World, Country, and Wild Bird.
Jim is the author and photographer of three books: West Virginia: The Allegheny Highlands (Westcliffe Publishers), Mountain Memories: An Appalachian Sense of Place (WVU Press) and The Land Between Ocean & Bay: A Natural Celebration of the Eastern Shore. Jim just started working on his fourth book entitled Virginia, Then & Now, which will be published by Westcliffe Publishers in early 2008. Also in the works is one more book about his beloved home state of West Virginia. The documentary film, “Mountain Memories,” profiles Jim's life and career as a nature photographer. The film, which aired on PBS in August 2003, was also shown at the prestigious 2005 American Conservation Film Festival.
A contributing editor for Outdoor Photographer magazine, Jim is also President of the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA). In 2000, Jim received NANPA's Outstanding Recognition Award. He is a frequent speaker and instructor at the annual NANPA summits. Jim also serves on the advisory board for Nature's Best Magazine and is an associate for the on-line Nature of Writing School. Jim has been a member of the Fujifilm Talent Team since 2000.
Jim's programs “Mason Jars and Memories” and “A Natural Celebration” have been well received by thousands of folks. Jim conducts nature photography workshops, tours, and seminars across the country. Jim loves to share with others his passion for nature, photography, and life.
